Knives and Razors

We carry new knives from several manufacturers, and new straight razors from Dovo.  We also carry restored, ready to shave, straight razors, as they become available.  The vintage straight razor inventory changes regularly and is growing.  If you see something you are interested in please email us to check availability and discuss purchase.  Write down the number and name of item, under the picture.  Any razor you see here is subject to prior sale.  We also sell on ebay and we will mark these if they are listed on ebay.  If you want to see our current listings on ebay  click here or our user name is 'powertoolsnow'.  Please don't let the fact that they are on ebay keep you from inquiring.  They don't always sell on ebay, or we can pull it off if there are no bids.

We have many more razors than are listed.  It's kind of a tedious chore as you might imagine.  We sell New Dovo razors.  The plainer models stating at $79. On the menu to your left, the Resources button will bring up some links to sources of razor and shaving information.  We will be adding to this as time allows.  We hope you enjoy our site, and viewing our razors.

NOTE:  It was recntly pointed out to me that many of our customers have the means to get their razor shave ready from about a 4000 grit finish.  In an effort to keep costs down, and not force anyone to pay for something he prefers to do himself, I have started listing some razors as Not Shave Ready.  I still correct any edge deficencies, set the bevel, and bring the edge to 4000 grit finish.  Please check the description closely.  I will still make shave ready for additional $8 for anyone who wants it.

Unless marked otherwise all of our razors are supplied shave ready.  Each razor is touched up just prior to shipping, so if you give us beard and shaving experience info, we will do our best to make it "shave ready" for YOUR face and beard.

Razor has been cleaned, sanitized, gently polished, honed, shaved with, and cleaned and sanitized again, and oiled.

Shave Ready.  For whom?  Truly shave ready depends on the skin, beard, shave preparation, and sharpness of the edge.  You may or may not have a hone if the edge is just not quite sharp enough.  Therefore, our shave ready is a completely hand honed surgical edge, finished on a hard, black, very fine, ‘surgical’, Arkansas stone.  It is too sharp for most faces.  If it feels rough on your face, simply run it over the strop.  We finish razors with chromium oxide or .5 micron diamond pasted strops.  We hone with 1 piece of electrical tape on the spine.  Strop bare blade.  You’ll need to know this for re-hones.

To straight razor shave, a strop and a knowledge of use is a must.  We keep a couple of strops on  hand, which we make from 8-10 ounce vegetable tanned cow hide.  I use these strops myself and find them more than adequite.  We sell them for    $27       2-1/2X20" useable.

Can be supplied, pasted on back side with chromium oxide, or .5 micron diamond paste, your choice, at no additonal charge.

What can you do with a strop and why you may want more than one

We carry but one type of honing

stone.  Depending on how involved you want to get, you will probably need up to 5 or 6 different stones/hones.  A really messed up edge may require a 500 grit diamond plate to straighten out.  Now you need about 1000 or so to get the deep scratches from the diamond out of the edge and finish setting the bevel.  From there you may care to go to something around 4000 then 8000 and finish with something around 10000 to 12000.  The idea is to get the edge correct with no chips or frowns, and then get a very smooth edge on it.

I have a Belgian Coticule, which many consider to be the only stone to finish with.  a 7X2X1/2" stone will run you about $200 and up.  I found that I prefered my black, surgical, Arkansas on most blades.  Some months back I tried a different stone, much less expensive, and I much prefer it over the previous mentioned stones.  I have found this stone, with a slurry, cuts faster and with clear water, gives a superior finish.

So I currently offer this stone to my customers, and like everything else, will take it back if you don't like it.  These stones come from Guangxi China.  They are hand cut, so not perfect on dimensions, but roughly 7x2x3/8".  The flats may not be perfectly parallel.  Right now I offer just the stone with a slurry stone, but am considering dressing a few up with a hardwood base.  Good thing about no base is that both flats can be used.  Right now, one flat has been lapped flat on a diamond plate, and the edges of that flat have been beveled.
